Londoners Series: The Homeless, outside Waterloo Station, 30 December, 1988

Outside Waterloo Station, under the arches, a barebones sandwich and coffee shack serves the homeless. I wanted to maintain a respectful distance so I took only four pictures from across the road. But as soon as I made the last image, I felt a tight grip on my neck. A drunk and disheveled guy throttled me and demanding to know what I was doing. I panicked… I don’t know what I said, but after a few ‘choice’ words, he finally let me go. I honestly think he was more interested in asserting his authority over me than about me taking pictures. But the incident spooked me. Ever since, I’ve always been hyper vigilant doing any kind of street photography.
