Londoners Series: The Pie Girl, Covent Garden, 30 December, 1988

I’ve always enjoyed Covent Garden, specially the street performers. Their loud, raucous, bawdy and rough round the edges humour suits me well. On this occasion, on a cold winter’s afternoon, the performer (I think he was American) had stripped down to his boxer shorts and was encouraging a small girl in the crowd to throw a cream pie in his face. Of course, everything had to be drawn out, but the expressions on the audience’s faces was what really interested me in this image. In the end, she missed his face completely and hit him in the chest. A second pie was produced and that one finally found its mark.
