Londoners Series: The Sign Man, Oxford Street, 7 January, 1989
Stanley Green had his own silent, solo protest movement, something he kept up from the late 1960s until his death in 1993. Essentially he advocated a low protein diet to reduce the libido and make people nicer. He carried his sign up and down Oxford Street and the West End day after day, year after year, until he became one of the most well known ‘unknown’ Londoners. After his death, the Museum of London obtained his sign and remaining pamphlets. When I stopped to take his picture in early 1989, he paused when he saw my camera, posing silently for me. I bought his pamphlet for 10p, and we parted ways. I still have it somewhere…
