Refectory, Fountains Abbey, North Yorkshire, 22 August 1990

In its day, Fountains Abbey was perhaps the wealthiest monastery in medieval England, owning land through the country. The Cistercian monastery was begun in 1132 and dissolved 400 years later at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. The almost perfectly preserved refectory, where the lay brothers ate their meals, is the architectural highlight of the ruins.
