Waterloo Station, 30 December, 1988

I brought a lot of black and white film with me as I made my way to London on the 30th of December in 1988. I was starting a project that was to become my “Londoners” series. Originally, I was going to ask people questions about their life, then take their portrait, but I couldn’t bring myself to stop strangers as they went about their business, so I just took the pictures. Over thirty-five years later, many of these people may be long gone, but the images of normal Londoners in the late 1980’s live on.
